"Telling Hard Truths to Marines About Trauma Recovery"

". . . and again, it's the truth. Okay, my first audience for this thing that I do. We're Marines and they're a horrible audience and they hate going to anything related to mental health - because of the classes people teach us. I mean, they're not very good. I'm not like that. And so I knew whatever I told them had to be anchored in the truth. And I was going to stand up. I was going to tell them true thing after true thing after true thing. And I told them, if you don't like it, I don't care. And so the things I told them, this is a skill like any other. There's nothing mystical about living a great life after you go through traumatic experiences. But I'm going to coach you like I'm a coach. A therapist would look at you and say, 'Well, Mic, I really think - let's talk about your use of alcohol. What do you think about that? That's not how I do it. I look at people and say, 'Hey, Stupid, stop drinking.' Okay. 'And don't tell me you can't because millions of people on this planet all over the world do it. So do not tell me you can't do it. If they can do it, you can do it because I won't accept that . . ."
