"When Family Trauma Surpasses the Horrors of War"

". . . In 1996, my oldest sister's two children were murdered by her husband when she said she wanted a divorce. Six years old and four years old, right? And then he killed himself in front of my sister. Now, I've spent three years in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it's important that people know this. Going to war is not the worst thing you could ever see in your life. My sister's in a zip code that I'm not even close to, and I've seen some bad things. And when I speak, I make sure (that) I state that point. If you've been sexually abused as a child, I'm not in that zip code. I have friends that are 'no kidding American war heroes' that have heard an interview I did with my sister. And they looked at me and said 'Man, I'd be embarrassed to talk about my stuff in front of your sister.' So people have to understand that these experiences happen. You can still live a great life, but you have to understand this environment, this new world that you live in, that life has shoved you into it, which I call the valley of the shadow of death. Life shoves you into the valley of the shadow of death. So what do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO? that's what (my book) 'From Trauma to Joy' is (all) about . . ."
