"Impacts of School-Based Services on Parental Rights"

". . . the parents will no longer be the child's advocate. And the question that comes to my mind is, how is that going to impact a child emotionally and mentally when they realize that their parents are no longer their advocate? The other thing is... in Oklahoma, for them to expand school-based services, they have no legal authority to do that because school-based services falls under the purview of federal law. IDEA, which is specific to children with special needs or if they are in special education, if they qualify for special education (because you can have a disability and not have any learning disabilities). But if you qualify under IDEA as a special education student and you need services, then you can receive those. But school-based services is for educationally-necessary services, not medical services. And so when they say expand, they're expanding this beyond the IEP . . ."
