"Tearful Moments and Moral Dilemmas in the O.R."

". . . and one of the things that he has talked about in great detail is brain death. He was at the operating table one time with a gentleman - this is earlier back in his career, which kind of led him on this path. And the guy had a tear rolling down his face. And he's like, you know, if this guy is dead, how is he having a reaction of having a teardrop? And he said he just, that was this beginning of knowing that there's something more here. So he started doing research. And, you know, I'm kind of jumping ahead, but I think it's important to note that when they go in for the organ harvesting, they give the person a paralytic so that they don't move during the procedure, because if they move, they might injure that organ. At that point, that's all it's about. But they do not give them enough anesthesia because if you give somebody too much morphine, then you're affecting their organs and they might not be as viable. So the person is not given enough anesthesia to put them under and they're given a paralytic so they can't move. And when they start the process. And Dr. Byrne, you know, has testified to this as well as Dr. Heidi Klessig - she's also an amazing person, anesthesiologist, retired. And she's talked about this, that when they put in the scalpel, the person's blood pressure goes up, the heart rate goes up. There have been cases where they have moved just the smallest amount, even with the paralytic agent. And some people that have been in the room that maybe are younger people that are witnessing this have left and they have decided they will not be a part of this . . ."
